A bill's been presented AGAIN at the State House that would allow undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver's license. Driving this effort by lawmakers once again is the argument it will increase safety on the road by ensuring that ALL drivers are trained, tested and insured. Where those submitting this bill get proof to back up these claims is beyond me. To get a license, the DMV requires applicants to have a social security number or proof they're authorized to be in this country. Under THIS bill, undocumented residents could use a foreign birth certificate or another legal document to obtain a license or permit. They'll also have to prove they've lived in the STATE for two years and have paid taxes for that long. This was a cornerstone of Governor Gina Raimondo's campaign for governor but may have taken a back seat on her agenda now to her proposed 2 years of free college tuition to Rhode Islander attending state colleges. THAT proposal includes undocumented students. I can't see state lawmakers having an appetite for both, or frankly either. Also, considering House Speaker Nick Matiello hasn't shown musch support for such legislation in the past, I think it's destined for the ON HOLD FOR FUTURE STUDY FOLDER.
