With Hollywood making so many action and superhero films, you’d think the only people that go to movies are kids, teenagers, and reallly nerdy adults. It turns out a lot of older folks are shelling out their hard-earned dollars to go to the theater.
A new report finds that more than 30% of all tickets sold go to moviegoers above the age of 50. As for what movies they like the most, 75% are for art house movies, while 56% are Christian films, plus the over 50 crowd is responsible for 54% of independent film box office revenues.
But the over 50 crowd aren’t just going for artsy films. They also tend to like what’s being described as “mature thrillers,” with 51% of those who saw films like “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,” “Taken 3,” and “A Walk Amongst The Tombstones,” over 50 as compared with just 32% for the total American movie going audience. They also help promote blockbusters, with Clint Eastwood’s “Sully,” bringing in $124 million domestically, with 57% of the audience over 50.
