Providence City Council Approves Racial Profiling Ordinance

(Providence, RI)  --  A controversial Providence racial profiling ordinance is closer to going into effect after city council last night unanimously approved the Community Safety Act.  The plan bans racial or discriminatory profiling and the police union is not thrilled with it as it also prevents police from helping any law enforcement operation that is solely aimed at immigration enforcement.  The plan requires officers to write reports when they stop people on the street and Officers Union President Sergeant Robert Boehm says that's just going to tie them up doing reports to the point where the police would say, "Why should I stop and ask anyone if I've constantly got to do a report on it?"  City council has to approve the ordinance a second time before it goes to the mayor for final approval.
