Any parent of a toddler knows that sometimes it’s just impossible to get kids to eat their vegetables. Well, according to a new study, it’s actually much worse than we probably think.
Researchers at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health surveyed mothers asking them to share a detailed description of what their kid ate on two specific dates. What they found was that a lot of young kids don’t eat vegetables at all, with 25% of six-to-11-month-olds, and 20% of one-year-olds eating no veggies on the days they were polled.
But that’s not all. The survey revealed that 26% of one-year-olds had eaten French fries a day prior to the survey, which is way more than ate dark green veggies (7.5%) or deep yellow veggies (17%). The one-year-olds also ate less healthy fruits and veggies than in other years, with the percentage of kids that age eating canned or frozen fruit decreasing 10% between 2005 and 2012, while there was a 50% decrease in consumption of dark green veggies.
