Initial Approval For Downtown Providence Smoking Ban

(Providence, RI)  --  There's a proposal to ban smoking around Kennedy Plaza and Burnside Park in downtown Providence.  It won first passage from the City Council last night despite a threatened veto by Mayor Jorge Elorza.   WPRI-TV reports that Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare says police enforcement of a smoking ban isn't practical.  In a letter to council members, Pare says limited public safety resources must be prioritized.
