It's going to take more than a "no confidence vote" to get indicted Providence City Council President Luis Aponte to step down from his post. Aponte's charged with embezzlement and misuse of campaign funds. Two of those are felony charges carrying the potential of 20 years behind bars...serious stuff. The council voted 12-1 "no confidence"...that ONE vote was, of course, Aponte's. Aponte's big argument for not stepping down is he thinks its an admission of guilt, but it should be noted the council members AREN'T saying he should give up his council seat, just the leadership position. Apparently, that was lost on about 100-folks Aponte represents in Ward 10 rallied as the City Council President made his first public remarks since being indicted. Some wore tee shirts that read "It's a Southside thing. You don't understand." Here's what I DO understand. The man's been indicted, he's lost the confidence of the council and mayor of his ability to lead. He'll have his day in court...but he shouldn't have it as the President of the Providence City Council.
