In a sudden about face, Luis Aponte resigned as President of the Providence City Council last Friday. This comes after a 9 day stretch where Aponte, who has been indicted on charges of embezzlement and misuse of campaign funds, held the council and city of Providence hostage with his HELL NO I WON'T GO dig in. So why the epiphany? Aponte issued a statement "After much deliberation, I have determined that it is in the best interest of my constituents, colleagues, and city to formally submit my resignation as Providence City Council President. Serving the people of Providence is one of the greatest honors of my lifetime, and I will remain committed to to representing my constituents in my capacity as councilman." His resignation was quite the contrast from his staged stunt earlier in the week in his Washington Park Ward surrounded by supporters wearing T-Shirts claiming nay-sayers don't understand South Providence. I work with folks who live in Aponte's ward who say those Tees are a bunch of bunk and Aponte not only should have stepped down as President but ALSO should have resigned his seat until his case is heard. Aponte's case is one of arrogance and selfishness, something too many Rhode Island lawmakers suffer from.
