(Providence, RI) -- State health and environmental officials are warning the public to avoid some lakes and ponds where an algae bloom has been discovered. Officials say the blue-green blooms produce toxins and have been found in Roosevelt Lake, Elm Lake and the Japanese Garden at Roger Williams Park in Providence, as well as St. Mary's Pond in Portsmouth. Skin contact can irritate nose, eyes or throat and can cause more serious symptoms if swallowed. Fishing should also be avoided.
