CHAFEE SAYS RAIMONDO'S ADMINISTRATION LACKS "TENACITY"

Former governor Linc Chafee told the Providence Journal he thinks the state "quit" on a defaced mural along route 95. The mural done by celebrated author and illustrator David Maccaulay was so badly vandalized by a tagger's graffiti that the state DOT couldn't salvage it and instead painted over it with a muted gray. Chafee, whom the Journal says led the charge to beautify Rhode Island's Highways with commissioned artwork, says the Raimondo administration showed a lack of tenacity and the DOT just "quit" in its efforts to preserve the mural. Chafee, sounding more and more like he's going to make another run at governor, admits he's considering it but hasn't determined when he'll make his decision or what party he'll align himself with. Mccauley's mural was so badly tagged there was really no way to save it so the DOT created a clean canvas. A spokesperson for the state DOT says it hasn't decided what it'll do moving forward. Chafee may think the DOT "quit" but I don't expect  Director Peter Alviti to play the role of Michelangelo. I expect him to make sure our state infrastructure is safe and sound....sort of like making sure the Sistine Chapel roof doesn't leak.Worry about the beautification later.
