Much of the dialogue about the violence in Charlottsville during that white supremacist demonstration seems to have morphed into debate about whether Confederate statues and monuments are appropriate. A survey from PBS NewsHour and Marist found 62% of Americans think the statues should remain, while 27% think they should be removed. I had to talk about this...A LOT last week. This weekend I had a chance to stop and digest it all..and you know what? I've been on this planet 6 decades and before last week, I don't think I EVER thought about those statues and monuments. is it because I don't live in the South...I don't think so. They're around these parts too. They've just never had any impact on me. None...a Dean Wormer...ZERO POINT ZERO. I've never passed a single Confederate statue, monument or flag and suddenly had an urge to support slavery. I'm also convinced removing this stuff will make those supporting the symbols feel any different deep in their hearts. Will it change history? No...in face, maybe those symbols can actually TEACH history. Why not, we don't teach American history in our classrooms anymore. And here's an idea....maybe all the time and money we're spending on taking these things down could be spent on, oh, let's say history books for schools.
