THE P-C POLICE TAKE ON COLUMBUS

The Los Angeles City Council voted to replace Columbus Day on the city's calendar with Indigenous Peoples Day, the move coming in response to activists who view Christoper Columbus as a symbol of genocide of native people in North America. The 14-1 vote to rename the paid city holiday came despite objections from Italian-American groups. Councilman Joe Buscaino said many people had forgotten the prejudice Italian-Americans faced in the U.S. and asked that the council not, quote, "cure one offense with another." But Councilman Mitch O'Farrell said replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day would right a historic wrong. He said, "We are not creating a racial conflict. We are ending one." Several other U.S. cities, including Seattle, Albuquerque and Denver, have also replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day. Back in 2009, the Brown University's faculty changed the name of Columbus Day to HARVEST WEEKEND then went a step further in 2015 to name it INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S DAY. BTW, the The John Carter Brown Library houses a collection of some of Christopher Columbus's original documents and maps. Hypocritical? I'll let you be the judge.
