IS OPINION OF THE PRESS ON THE RISE?

Americans' opinion of the press hasn't been very good in recent years, but a new poll has found that's changing, with trust in the news media on the rise. In the Reuters/Ipsos poll out yesterday (October 3rd), 48 percent said they had a "great deal" or "some" confidence in the press, up from 39 percent last November, while 45 percent said they had "hardly any" confidence in them, down from 51 percent. Looking at it by party, having a "great deal" or "some" confidence in the media rose by 11 percentage points among Democrats, compared to an increase of three percentage points among Republicans. Those results come in an atmosphere in which President Trump frequently bashes the press. The poll asked about confidence in other U.S. institutions as well, and found that Americans had the highest levels of confidence in the military, law enforcement and academia, while confidence fell in the executive branch -- meaning the presidency -- and Congress
