Big Tobacco Starts Showing Ads That Tell The Truth About Cigarette Addiction And Tactics-Big tobacco companies are starting to advertise about the dangers of smoking.
Philip Morris, RJ Reynolds and other tobacco companies, yesterday, put out the first of a series of court-ordered newspaper ads and television commercials detailing the dangers of tobacco use. The ads are a result of a 1999 lawsuit by the Justice Department charging big tobacco companies with deceiving the public about the effects of smoking.
Some of the statements made in the ads admit that: Smoking kills 1,200 people a day. The tobacco companies worked to make them as addictive as possible. There is no such thing as a safer cigarette.
Don't think BIG TOBACCO finally found s conscience. They simply got tired of spending the bucks batting the court ruling. The court ruled in the government's favor in 2006, and the companies spent eleven years appealing the decision. They finally agreed to run ads on "the adverse effects of smoking."
