Eons ago, I was taught it was "BETTER TO GET IT RIGHT THAN GET IT FIRST" regarding reporting a news story. That rule went out the window with the advent of 24/7 news networks. Another hard fast rule that still stands is "YOU CAN NEVER GO HARD (meaning a serious news story) AFTER YOU'VE DONE A SOFT STORY" (man bites dog kind of thing). I never studied about going IRRELEVANT after a HARD news story. On Monday, Americans awoke to news of an attempted terror attack in New York City. Thankfully nobody was hurt in what's believed to be a failed suicide bombing carried out by someone inspired by ISIS. CNN covered the story....but then made the decision to ease into a segment following up on a NY Times story that President Donald Trump drinks as many as a dozen cans of Diet Coke a day. How the fact the leader of the free world downs a gallon of diet coke a day is a matter of national security escapes me. CNN was rightfully criticized in a social media blitz for covering such a bizarre story when clearly other pressing events were happening. When big news breaks, good news operations know how to abandon their rundown sheets and go with the flow...and when I say flow, I'm not referring to Diet Coke.
