PAWSOX STADIUM BECOMES POLITICAL FOOTBALL

Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien is urging the General Assembly to act immediately to approve public funding for a new Pawsox stadium warning losing the team  to Worcester is a real possibility. Worcester's been wooing the Pawsox and met with team honchos for three hours this week. The Senate Finance Committee earlier this month released amended legislation asking the team to make financial and other additional commitments in exchange for up to $44 million in taxpayer financing for the new $83 million dollar ballpark. Pawsox leadership wasn't too happy with the tweaks but say they're still looking over the bill. Governor Raimondo's already urged lawmakers to get a deal done. Seante President Domonick Ruggerio supports the stadium proposal and expects his chamber to approve it next month but House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello, the most powerful person on Smith Hill, remains skeptical and isn't committing to allowing a House vote on it. RI GOP head Brandon Bell says State House politicians would be making a big mistake if they think they can vote for this deal and get re-elected. The REAL mistake here is comparing this to the 38 STUDIOS debacle because it's apples and oranges.
