WHAT'S IN A NAME

There's some buzz about renaming TF Green Airport in Warwick. Right now the popular choice of replacements is RHODE ISLAND INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. That seems fine to me. It makes us sound BIGGER and most think bigger is better. I saw a TV report on this the other night with the reporter asking passengers at the airport if they knew who TF Green was. The passengers, not surprisingly, were clueless. This didn't exactly shock me. Had the reporter asked the same passengers to name the three branches of government or the name of the Vice President, my guess is the same oblivious look would adorn their faces. Rhode island's airport's not the only one named after less than famous individuals. Logan in Boston is named after military General Edward Lawrence Logan who fought in the Spanish-American War and World War One. In New York, LaGuardia is named for Fiorello LaGuardia who was mas mayor from 1935 to 1945 and oversaw the airport construction. JFK certainly needs to no bio explaination...at least I hope not. In Connecticut, Bradley International's named after Lt. Eugene Bradley, an Army pilot who crashed his P-40 during a training drill when the air field was still a military base. So it's not rare large airports are named after less than household names. By the way, the Vice President is Mike Pence and the three branches of government are Executive, Legislative and Judicial.
