STATE LAWMAKERS "URGED" TO ATTEND SESSIONS ON HARASSMENT

Those of us working for large companies in the REAL world are used to sexual harassment training. Many of us must undergo mandatory training twice a year. You sit, you watch a video, you're run through a few example situations and answer a few questions about those situations. The whole experience lasts about half an hour. Rhode Island lawmakers for the first time are being urged to attend sexual harassment...you heard that right...urged, meaning it's optional training.  Back in October, State Rep Teresa Tanzi said she was told by a more senior lawmaker that sexual favors would allow her bills to go further. The discosure by that unnamed knuckle dragger prompted House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello to offer training which I applaud. The two and a half hour long training being offered is being conducted by an employee of the state Department of Administration's Office of Diversity, Equity and Opportunity. Our state lawmakers are part timers and asking them to take another two and a half hours out of their day seems excessive. I suggest they cut the training back to less than an hour and make it mandatory.
