IDIOTIC USE OF AN IDIOM

Do you know what an idiom is? You likely use one from time to time. An idiom is an everyday phrase or expression that has a figurative , or sometimes, literal meaning. A chip on your shoulder...High as a kite...sick as a dog. Sometimes the origin of an idiom can make YOU look like an idiot.

Here is a story that shows somewhere between every day speak and political correctness, the country has lost its mind.

Or maybe it’s just me and you agree with the Oklahoma City Thunder who recently called out their play-by-play announcer Brian Davis saying he used "offensive and inappropriate" words during Wednesday's broadcast when he said star player Russell Westbrook was "out of his cotton-pickin' mind."

For those of you who haven’t had a conversation in the past decade, the phrase "out of his cotton-pickin' mind," loosely means "crazy," but had its origins in describing workers who harvested cotton crops in the South.

And call me crazy but I am fairly certain a man like Davis who has spent over two decades calling sporting events everywhere would suddenly decide to toss out a racial slur.

Nevertheless, Dan Mahoney, the team's vice president of broadcasting had this to say about it.

"We think obviously the use of that term was offensive and inappropriate, and I expressed that to Brian last night. Brian assures me that it was not meant in any derogatory way, and he apologizes. But again, we feel strongly that it's inappropriate and offensive."

The Thunder said they did not know whether Davis, a full-time employee of the team, would apologize for his comments on a future broadcast.

"That's really up to Brian," Mahoney said. "Again, we've expressed to him strongly that it was offensive and inappropriate, and that's all we can do for right now."
