TALE OF THE TAPE

A secret tape of a conversation between Donald Trump and his former attorney Michael Cohen isn’t a secret anymore. CNN broadcast the tape that was allegedly recorded in 2016.

The recording, which came to CNN courtesy of Cohen's attorney, Lanny Davis, is purported to deal with how Trump was looking to buy the rights to the story of Playboy model Karen McDougal, who says she had an affair with him. So what can we hear?

While there are a number of remarks that appear to be irrelevant, Cohen can be heard talking about starting a company for, quote, "the transfer of all that info regarding our friend David."Davis says that refers to Trump's friend David Pecker, the head of National Enquirer owner American Media.Trump is heard saying, "pay with cash," but the audio isn’t complete and it's unclear whether he suggests paying with cash or not paying. Cohen says, "no, no" but it is not clear what is said next.

It’s worth noting that McDougal’s name is never mentioned in the recording – and that no payment was made by Trump regarding her. And while the tape’s release comes as Cohen has been described as “ready to flip” against President Trump – his current attorney Rudy Giuliani hears the tape differently. He tells Fox News, quote - "There's no indication of any crime being committed on this tape.”

So what's all this mean? Likely nothing. It's not exactly a stop the presses moment to learn Donald Trump's as big a hound as JFK and Bill Clinton , is it?
