State Rejects Bid For Larger Fast Ferry

(Warwick, RI)  --  An application to build a larger fast ferry to Block Island is being rejected.  The Rhode Island Division of Public Utilities and Carriers has denied the proposal for the eight-and-a-half-million-dollar ferry from Interstate Navigation, which was hoping to add a vessel that could carry five-hundred passengers per trip, double the capacity of its current fast ferry.  The PUC says in its decision that it will investigate whether Interstate's request was designed to interfere with competitor Rhode Island Fast Ferry's plans to begin offering high-speed ferry service.  A spokesperson for Interstate says an appeal is possible.
