When people gathered to pray at a mosque in Seaside, California for Friday services, Jews, Christians, and people who aren’t religious at all gathered outside to make sure the Muslims inside felt safe. The interfaith event was organized by Rabbi Bruce Greenbaum of Congregation Beth Israel and held at the Islamic Society of Monterey County during the first services held since the shootings in New Zealand a week before.
"We wanted to send out a very strong message that we support their presence in our community that following the tragedy, the horrific shooting in New Zealand, we don't ever want them to be concerned that it could happen here," Greenbaum says.
While Muslims went inside the mosque for the midday call to prayer, dozens stood outside to support their neighbors and ease their fears. Many supporters held signs with positive messages like, “We love Muslims and will keep watch while you pray.”
