A state of emergency is being declared in New York's Rockland County over a measles outbreak. Officials say that more than 150 people have been diagnosed with measles in Rockland County – which is just north of New York City.
As a result, the county is banning all minors, who haven’t been vaccinated, from public places beginning tonight at midnight. County officials say anyone under 18-years-old must receive the MMR vaccine or must stay away from places where the disease could be spread. The emergency declaration expires in 30 days.
It's unclear how authorities will enforce the ban on public places…but it is clear who they’re targeting. Apparently, Rockland County has a high number of orthodox Jews – and that’s the community being hit hardest by the outbreak. As for punishments for ignoring the declaration, officials say it could mean a $500 fine – or six months in jail.
