Governor Calls For Free Tuition Program Expansion

(Providence, RI)--Governor Gina Raimondo pushed for her proposed expansion of Rhode Island's free college tuition program at the Rhode Island State House on Wednesday.Raimondo testified before the Senate Finance and Education Committees arguing for more than five-million additional dollars for the RI Promise scholarship initiative, which would be expanded from just covering high school grads going to Community College of Rhode Island to also include juniors and seniors at Rhode Island College and adult learners at CCRI.Although the governor called the expansion a drop in the bucket in terms of Rhode Island's nearly-ten-billion-dollar budget, legislative leaders say money is tight right now.
