Providence Officer Cleared Of Wrongdoing

(Providence, RI)--The Providence police officer who was placed on leave last week has been cleared of wrongdoing.Public safety commissioner Steven Pare on Wednesday exonerated Officer James Lewis, who had been linked in reports on Tuesday to an investigation into stolen tires and tire rims in East Providence and was also being investigated for running license plates for non-police purposes. Here is what police say happened: Lewis was mentoring an aspiring officer who was involved in a crash, the woman asked him to run the info for verification, which Pare told The Providence Journal is something that the police department does all the time. The woman reportedly wound up taking her car to someone in East Providence who was a suspect in the tire theft case, which is apparently what led to questions initially being asked.
