Providence City Council Passes Plastic Bag Bill

(Providence, RI)--Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza is expected to sign a bill passed by the city council last night that mandates reduced plastic bag usage.The Plastic Bag Reduction Act, passed on Earth Day, prohibits retail locations from giving out plastic bags at check-out, unless they qualify for an exemption.Violators will be fined.Elorza vetoed a similar ordinance last year, citing the need for more community engagement.
