Valerie Castile is honoring her son’s memory by carrying on something he used to do to help others.Philando Castile worked as a nutrition specialist in St. Paul, Minnesota before he was fatally shot by a police officer in 2016, and he would often pay outstanding lunch bills for his students. Now his mom is helping to make sure Minnesota students don’t go hungry by donating $8,000 on behalf of the Philando Castile Relief Foundationto Cooper High School to pay outstanding school lunch debts.
“Most families live paycheck to paycheck, and the last thing they need to be worrying about is how can I pay this debt at the end of the year,” Valerie says. “What I’m doing are things that my son felt in his heart and that’s children, family, and community.”
