State Leaders Introduce Legislative Reform

(Providence, RI)--An education reform package including more than a half-dozen bills is being unveiled by Rhode Island legislative leaders.House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello said yesterday that they were disappointed with the results of Rhode Island's first-ever Comprehensive Assessment System standardized test, modeled after the exam used in Massachusetts. He said a standardized statewide curriculum has to be in line with testing, as the Bay State has done. The comprehensive reform would also give principals more responsibility for school management and would change the Rhode Island Department of Education's role from making sure laws are being followed to more of a coaching role.
