Fifth Child Dies in US Custody After Being Detained By Border Agents

A fifth migrant child has died in U.S. custody after being detained by border agents, with a 16-year-old from Guatemala dying yesterday (May 20th).Carlos Gregorio Hernandez Vasquez had been held by immigration authorities for six days after crossing the border illegally, which is twice as long as allowed under federal law, and then sent to another holding facility after being diagnosed with the flu. Five minors have died after being apprehended by U.S. border agents since December, all of them from Guatemala. A surge in border crossings, and a big shift in families now coming instead of individuals, has overwhelmed overcrowded facilities to hold them. In the latest death of a migrant child before Vasquez, a two-year-old child died last week after he was hospitalized for several weeks following he and his mother being detained by the Border Patrol.
