How To Celebrate Pride With Your Kids

We celebrate most major holidays with our kids, but what about Pride? June is Pride month and all across the country there are parties, parades, and events that would be fun for the whole family and are a great way to support the LGBTQ+ community with your kids. Showing your support will encourage your kiddos to be more inclusive of everyone all year long, so try one of these ways to celebrate Pride with the kids.

  • Go to a parade- With all the music, fun, and cool floats to look at, everyone loves a parade. And the LGBTQ+ community takes it to the next level, so look for an age-appropriate event in your area the kids would enjoy.
  • Read some books- Find some kids’ story books about LGBTQ+ people, like “Julian Is a Mermaid” about a boy who wants to be a mermaid, or “Prince & Knight,” where the prince doesn’t fall in love with the traditional princess, but with the handsome knight instead.
  • Paint a picture- Celebrate Pride with the kiddos and a rainbow of colors for a little art time.
  • Watch a movie- Grab some popcorn for a family movie night to show your teen what life is like for LGBTQ+ teens today with films like “Love, Simon” or go for the classic drag queen comedy “The Birdcage.”
  • Pick a cause- Donate your time, money, or services to an organization like the National Center for Transgender Equalitythat helps protect military troops or GLSENthat’s working to create a safe learning environment for LGBTQ+ kids in K-12.
