Suicide Among Young People Continuing to Rise

Suicide rates among young people have continued to grow in recent years according to new research out yesterday (June 18th) that found the suicide rate among 15- to 24-year-olds rose in 2017 to its highest level since 2000. An increase in suicides was particularly seen among 15- to 19-year-olds and among young men, according to the Harvard Medical School research. Among teens ages 15 to 19, the suicide rate was 8 per 100,000 people in 2000 and increased to 11.8 per 100,000 in 2017, and among young adults ages 20 to 24, the suicide rate was 12.5 per 100,000 people in 2000 and rose to 17 per 100,000 in 2017. The research didn't look at what factors could be behind the increase, but Emory University School of Medicine psychiatry and behavioral sciences professor Nadine Kaslow suggested to CNN that they could include that family and community structures may not be as tight-knit as in the past, or that more technology use has led to young people spending less time forming real-world relationships and being mo
