Student Creates Lead Filtering Straw

LaMonté Pierce has created an invention that will change the way we drink water. The graduate student at Jackson State University Pierce recently patented his Cleanstraww. It’s designed to remove lead and other contaminants from up to 20 gallons of liquid.

The idea started as group project a few years ago when Pierce and his classmates were asked to find a solution to a problem in Mississippi. Once the assignment was finished, he and his partner, Andrew Willis, kept doing research. They ended up finding a solution that addresses water contamination in communities across the world. They created straws with a 3D printer using FDA approved materials. “If we can filter out lead, we can pretty much filter out anything,” Pierce said. “Take the responsibility of clean water directly out of the government, state and city officials hands and put it in the hands of the consumers. If you want clean water, here you go.”

The young man’s impressive invention has already received offers from major retailers like Wal-Mart. If all goes according to plan, the straw will be available for purchase later this year. He’s also looking for investors to help grow his business and create more jobs in Mississippi.
