Lawmakers Don't Want Bike, Pedestrian Path Funding To Be Diverted

(Providence, RI)--Ahead of a planned vote, some Rhode Island lawmakers are looking to protect state resources for bike and pedestrian projects.Letters signed by over 50 state senators and representatives are urging the State Planning Council to reject a proposed amendment to the state's ten-year transportation spending plans. That amendment would cut 37-million dollars from the program funding the bike and walkways when that council meets today. The money would be diverted to road and bridge improvement efforts.A statement supporting the funding shift was put out by at least one legislator, state Representative Dennis Canario, who said Rhode Island is consistently ranked as having the worst roads and bridges in the country.
