How To Be A More Mindful Eater

We know that eating a variety of nutritious foods is important for our health, but it’s not just aboutWHATwe eat,HOWwe eat is also important. That’s why mindful eating is so important. When we eat without paying attention, we tend to overeat because we’re not paying attention to our body’s signals that we’re full. And let’s be honest, most of us are guilty of distracted eating because we’re watching TV or scrolling through our phones while we rush to eat.

Dr. Chris Mohris a Registered Dietitian and nutritional expert and these are some of his strategies for being more mindful with your eating habits.

  • When you plan to eat, set a timer for 20 minutes.Use the entire time to eat and focus on each bite so you don’t wolf it all down in five minutes.
  • Try eating with your non-dominant hand. It will feel a little awkward, so you’ll be forced to slow down and be more aware of your food.
  • Eat silently for five minutes while you think about what it took to produce the meal.Consider everything from the sun to the farmer to getting the food to the store and cooking it.
  • Take small bites. And thoroughly chew your food before digging into another forkful.
  • Before you open the pantry or fridge, ask yourself “Am I really hungry?”You can also try doing something else first, like drinking water or going for a short walk, to help you figure it out.
