Ruby Rose On “Batwoman's” LGBTQ Empowerment

Ruby Rose isn’t letting a stunt injury stop her from going full steam ahead as the CW’s first openly lesbian superhero in “Batwoman.” In a new interview, Rose says that she put a lot of thought into the role and the impact she could have on the LGBTQ community.

Rose doesn’t feel any pressure of representing an out and proud lesbian superhero on the small screen, but she does hope it encourages more on-screen representation for the LGBTQ community. But at the same time, the actress feels like whether she's playing a straight or gay character, she's sending the same message.

“Everything I do in my life has a similar message, whether it’s ‘Orange Is The New Black’ or ‘John Wick,’ whether I’m playing straight or gay,” she says. “I wish there was a show like this when I was growing up, I wish I had more representation on TV, film, media growing up and I just didn’t.”

  • Leading the set for the first time for the upcoming CW show, Rose says she drew inspiration from Vin Diesel– specifically, in “xXx: Return of Xander Cage.” No matter how busy he was at the time with all his projects, she knew he was “really invested” in what he was doing. That showed her that it’s important to “find time to make this feel really special and make us feel really welcome.”
