A court ruling could clear the way for the first US supervised injection site to open in Philadelphia.
Supervised injection sites, which have operated for decades in Canada and Europe, allow people to use drugs such as heroin under medical supervision and be revived if they overdose.
That’s not legal according to the Justice Department, so they’ve gone to battle with Safehouse, the non-profit who would open it’s injection site in Philly. Until the court battle is over, which will be a while since the DOJ is appealing, the feds will be watching. They warn, “Any attempt to open illicit drug injection sites in other jurisdictions while this case is pending will continue to be met with immediate action.”
While opioid use is still high in Philly, meth and heroin use is rising.
