Turkish military and Syrian rebels will reportedly cross the Syrian border "shortly."
A Turkish official made the announcement on Twitter early today, as US troops made a surprise withdrawal from the region. The policy shift by President Trump has been widely criticized in Washington as a betrayal of America's Kurdish allies.
Officials said Tuesday that the Turkish military had struck the Syrian-Iraqi border to prevent Kurdish forces from using the route to reinforce the region. Turkey views the Kurdish fighters in northeast Syria as terrorists because of their ties to militants waging an insurgency inside Turkey.
Today's tweet from a Turkish official said, "Turkey has no ambition in northeastern Syria except to neutralize a long-standing threat against Turkish citizens and to liberate the local population" from "armed thugs."
