Congressman Elijah Cummings has passed away.
The Maryland Democrat was 68 years old. A tweet from his office says he died this morning at approximately 2:45 Eastern time at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. The congressman had been suffering from "longstanding health challenges."
Cumming was the chairman of the House Oversight Committee. The lifetime Maryland native won a special election for the seat he held in 1996 and was elected 12 more times. He was married to the chairwoman of the Democratic Party in Maryland, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings. They had three children.
