Family Confirms Actor John Witherspoon’s Death

Comic actor John Witherspoon has died.

His family posted on Twitter yesterday confirming his death, saying they are in shock at the sudden passing. The actor, who was best known for his iconic role as Willie Jones in the "Friday" series, started his stand-up comedy career in the 1970s.

Witherspoon also voiced the grandfather in “The Boondocks” and was in the films “Boomerang” and “Vampire In Brooklyn.” The comedian got the national spotlight with frequent visits to “Late Show with David Letterman.”

Ice Cube played his son in the “Friday” movies and tweeted "Life won't be as funny without him." Witherspoon is survived by his wife and two sons. He was 77.
