Rhode Island Slave History Medallion Unveiled In Portsmouth

(Portsmouth, RI)--Rhode Island's history with slavery is being brought to attention.The Newport Daily News reports about 50 people, including Congressman David Cicilline, gathered at Patriots Park in Portsmouth on Saturday for the unveiling of a bronze slave medallion, which features a QR code that people can scan with their phones to learn more.This particular memorial calls to attention the slaves who were purchased to fight in the Battle of Rhode Island during the Revolutionary War.The chairman of the Rhode Island Slave History Medallions project says a medallion will be placed in over two-dozen cities and towns in the state.
