Despite its strong reviews, “Queen & Slim” director Melina Matsoukas wasn’t surprised that her movie didn’t get a single Golden Globe nominations. Why? She claims that the Golden Globes voters almost completely ghosted the movie.
Speaking to“Variety,”Matsoukas says she held three screenings for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that “almost no members attended” – a source tells the outlet the actual number was about four. Matsoukas says the turnout was reflective of the HFPA’s “voting body” rather than the industry or society – the same voting body that didn’t nominate a single female director or screenwriter.
“They don’t value the stories that represent all of us, and those stories are so often disregarded and discredited, as are their filmmakers,” Matsoukas adds. “It’s extremely discouraging. It’s extremely infuriating. And it just represents an archaic system that is full of people who don’t value us.”
