The brakes were put on the peace talks between the U.S. and the Taliban because of an attack at a U.S. airbase this week.
The U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan said he spoke with Taliban negotiators and expressed outrage about the attack at Bagram airfield. Zalmay Khalilzad said "must show they are willing & able to respond to Afghan desire for peace."
The Taliban “spokesperson” for Voice of America suggested the attack had no bearing on the talks and said the atmosphere in yesterday’s meetings were “good and positive.”
Two Afghan civilians were killed and 70 more hurt. The U.S. envoy said talks are on a "brief pause" so the Taliban negotiators can talk to their leaders about the attack.
