Former National Security Adviser John Bolton says he is "prepared to testify" in the Trump impeachment trial if he is subpoenaed. In a statement, Bolton said he made the decision with careful consideration.
As you might recall, Bolton previously said he would not testify before the House Intelligence Committee during its impeachment investigation unless he was subpoenaed and a judge ordered him to defy the White House.
Why’s it matter? Bolton was on the July 25thphone call President Trump had with the Ukrainian president, which House Democrats have based the two articles of impeachment on. In the call, Trump asked President Zelensky to investigate his political rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
- As “open” as Bolton might be, he may not have a choice. President Trump has the right to assert executive privilege– thereby preventing Bolton from uttering a word. And when you consider the battle lines over any witnesses being called at all for the Senate Impeachment trial...he’ll like not even be called.
- Of course, that’s if the Impeachment Articles even make to the Senate – thus far, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has refused to send the articles to the Senate. In response, a group of Senators are now moving to have the whole prosecution tossed for “lack of prosecution.”
