Governor's Budget Includes Another Attempt To Legalize Marijuana

(Providence, RI)--Governor Gina Raimondo's proposed 2020 budget plan released on Thursday would go past the ten-billion-dollar mark for the first time in state history, at ten-point-two-billion.The budget includes another attempt to legalize adult-use cannabis featuring state-run stores, modeled after liquor stores in New Hampshire. In reaction, House Speaker Nick Mattiello said he's very concerned since Raimondo was advised it would not be an acceptable policy to the General Assembly previously. The budget includes real estate transfer tax increases for high-end homes and commercial properties to pay for affordable housing; it does not include proposals to raise broad-based taxes. It calls for more spending in the areas of education and jobs training.
