(Providence, RI)--Legislation is being introduced to allow for abortion coverage in the health plans of Rhode Island state employees and Medicaid recipients. The bill overturns a ban on the procedure being covered for state employees and would make Rhode Island the fifth New England state to have its Medicaid program cover abortion.State Representative Liana Cassar says the Reproductive Privacy Act that was passed in Rhode Island last year eliminated many of the unconstitutional laws enacted in the state after Roe v. Wade, and that the ban is a backdoor means of denying reproductive rights.State Senator Bridget Valverde says the current system in place is discriminatory against the two groups of insured individuals.
