Gov. Raimondo Extends Distance Learning Through April

Governor Gina Raimondo has extended Rhode Island’s distance learning program through the end of April. She says that by most accounts, the program is working extremely well.

The governor also announced that there are 114 new cases of coronavirus in Rhode Island, bringing the total to 408 people infected in the state.41 of those cases are hospitalized. The total number of deaths related to coronavirus is now four. The most recent death was a man in his 70’s who had underlying health issues.

For students who lack the ability to access the internet, the governor announced that the state has partnered with four smart phone service and internet service providers to provide WIFI “hot spots” which will allow internet access for free until May 18th. Additionally, Cox Communications is offering free or reduced internet service to qualifying families.

Raimondo took time in her Monday briefing to address Rhode Island school children, encouraging them to read as much as possible every day. The governor She also announced that she will be holding a special press conference on Thursday, in which she will specifically address children and take their questions.

Governor Raimondo admits that with testing ramping up this week, she will likely be delivering “tough news” regarding the rate of virus spread, but advised that the best way to keep those numbers in check is to stay home and avoid gatherings of more than five people.

Dept. of Health Director Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott used Monday’s briefing to remind Rhode Islanders not to show up at their health providers without an appointment. “If you are sick, stay home and call your provider,” she said.Health care providers will direct patients who are suspected of being infected to coronavirus to a testing site.
