Governor, Corrections Department Support Prisoner Release

(Cranston, RI)--With increasing concerns about the effect of the coronavirus on Rhode Island's prison population, the governor and the state Department of Corrections are backing a proposed prisoner release, according to a Providence Journal Report.The move to release prisoners with 90 days or less left to serve was proposed by the Rhode Island Public Defender.Attorney General Peter Neronha's office has stated opposition to the release plan, which would have to be approved by the Rhode Island Supreme Court.This comes as the Department of Corrections announced yesterday that a second correctional officer has tested positive for COVID-19.
