(Providence, RI)--Officials estimate there were more than ten-thousand people who took part in a protest in Providence on Friday evening against police brutality in America, especially against people of color, with the recent death of George Floyd in Minneapolis serving as a flashpoint. The original protest, organized by a local youth group, ended at the State House, and then demonstrators broke off from there for more marching in the downtown area.Police officers were dressed in riot gear and the National Guard was there on Friday; although there were some tense moments, especially in the post-State House action, authorities said things were mostly peaceful, and only a handful of arrests were made.Elsewhere, organized Black Lives Matter protests were reported on Saturday in Newport and Bristol, and Congressman David Cicilline attended an event in Barrington on Sunday.
