Woman Creates GoFundMe For Son's Funeral, But He's Not Dead

New Jersey mother Holly Garcia is making her way around news outlets for trying to scam donors of $5,000 with a GoFundMe fundraiser for her 4-year-old son, who she said died of cancer. However, the young child has not passed away.

As per Page Six, the boy in question was adopted by another couple, per prosecutors, prompting Garcia, 33, to be arrested on September 24. She was charged of computer criminal activity and attempted theft by deception. The couple, who adopted the child, exposed Garcia when they told authorities that their son's photo was being used in a GoFundMe campaign seeking funds for his funeral arrangements.

According to Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina, Garcia had signed away her parental rights to the boy before creating the GoFundMe, which was first seen in June. Aside from the aforementioned campaign, Garcia had previously set up campaigns for a number of other fake reasonings, including donation requests for an urn for her dead son’s ashes, assistance for an unborn child and a 4-year-old son who was losing vision in one eye, a stroller for a 2-month-old son and even money to pay rent while homeless and four months pregnant.

Garcia has since been released from custody as of last week after her initial court appearance. Her case is now heading to a grand jury for possible indictment, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office.
