Rhode Island's House Speaker is ready to take his exit from his role as state representative. Rep. Nicholas Mattiello has conceded to challenger Barbara-Ann Fenton-Fung, the wife of Cranston Mayor Alan Fung, and a vocal critic of Mattiello. The concession was first reported around 10am on Wednesday by WJAR-TV.
As of Wednesday morning, Fenton-Fung held 58.8% of the vote with some mail ballots still uncounted. Mattiello has been under fire in the media recently for his role in allowing the Pawsox to depart to Worcester. He was also a witness in the high profile money laundering trial of former campaign aid Jeff Britt. The trial involved the source of funding for a mailer that favored Mattiello in a previous campaign.
