(Wilmington, DE) -- President-elect Biden is choosing Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo as his pick for Commerce Secretary. Raimonod is set to be announced as the nominee around 1:30pm on Friday. Raimondo is the first woman governor of Rhode Island and has served in the role since 2014. Biden also considered her to be his pick for Vice President, but that role ultimately went to California Senator Kamala Harris. The Commerce Department handles a variety of functions, but most notably it handles the U.S. census, which has become a topic of controversy under the Trump Administration.
Lt. Governor Dan McKee, who will take office as the new governor at a date still to be determined, says that he is ready to lead the state and and that he and Raimondo have discussed the upcoming transition.
